To start off on the helmets, helmets isn't as safe as you would have thought. The helmets in the NFL can only cover half of the impact. So if the impact is 120 G’s of force to the head the helmet could cover close to 60 G’s of the force that hit you. “Helmet material is too stiff, it’s not able to absorb the force,”… (Sifferlin Para 2). If you made the helmet material softer then it could absorb the impact in a much more effective way. “We need better materials [for helmets] and we can borrow from nature. Maybe we need a material that’s sort of like keratin” … (Sifferlin Para 5). A team of college students at UCLA has given an effort at making the foam inside the helmet better by replacing it with a material called micro lattice. Micro lattice is much safer and more efficient than any foam padding in the helmets. So if, the helmets were made with better materials, player’s brains could be better protected.
